Ion traps use electric or magnetic fields used to capture charged particles, usually in a system isolated from the external environment. Trapped ions have many scientific uses and applications in areas such as precision measurements, mass spectrometry, clocks and plasma physics. More recently they are being heavily researched and employed as promising platforms for applications in quantum computing, quantum sensing and for probing fundamental physics.
This book introduces the fundamentals of ion trap technology with a focus on the two most common ion traps: the Penning trap, which uses a combination of electric and magnetic fields, and the RF or Paul trap which uses a combination of static and oscillating electric fields. Penning traps are routinely employed for precise measurements with mass spectroscopy. Paul traps are most often used for accurate atomic clocks and studies of quantum states and their manipulation. As such, they are a major focus of research in the development of trapped ion quantum computers.
Following an overview of the types of traps and their operation, the book explores their key areas of application for the development of new physics, chemistry, or engineering at a level accessible by students. The introductory nature and broad coverage will also make the book essential reading for scientists who wish to understand and explore the use of ion traps in their research. Embracing optical manipulation, entanglement and exploitation in quantum computing, chemical reactivity, atomic clocks and testing fundamental physics this book provides a broad and accessible introduction to the world of ion traps and how our understanding and exploitation of trapped ions is furthering modern science and technology.



Born and raised in Nagoya, Japan, Dr Kajita graduated from the Department of Applied Physics, at the University of Tokyo in 1981 and obtained his Ph. D. from the Department of Physics, at the University of Tokyo in 1986. After working at the Institute for Molecular Science, he joined Communications Research Laboratory (CRL) in 1989. In 2004, the CRL was renamed the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT). In 2009, he was a guest professor at the Université de Provence, Marseille, France.
