In the early 22nd Century the United States is overwhelmed by a violent socio-economic crisis, which threatens to tear the country apart, further destabilizing a world disrupted by climate change, conflicts, pandemics, and multiple technological disruptions. Central to the crisis is a genetically engineered elite who control America's economy and its institutions. Enjoying unparalleled wealth and opportunity, they live in a world where AI, genetic medicine, and reproductive technologies have pushed the frontiers of their existence far beyond what was once imaginable. For them, cancers, neurodegenerative diseases, epidemics, and physical and mental imperfections have all but vanished. They are the most perfect iteration of the human species to have ever walked the planet, free to pursue pleasure, vanity, and social status, oblivious to the masses of ordinary naturally conceived Americans struggling in a corporatist system designed to lock them out. Realizing the existential threat to the future of the American Republic, a progressive alliance narrowly elects a new President who promises to resolve the crisis by nationalizing access to human genetic engineering and medicine, emulating other developed economies who implemented these changes decades earlier to prevent collapse. With time of the essence, the nascent Administration quickly hires a team of experts to devise a path to bring the President's promise to fruition. Part of the team is Zane Fischer, a young and brilliant mathematician working for Syllabus, a prestigious consulting firm located in Salish City, far from the political and economic epicentre of the United States. The path forward for the President's plan is far from certain, with many entrenched and powerful forces opposing the new Administration, ruthlessly willing to use everything at their disposal to protect their interests, and not hesitating to destroy anything in their path.
