The purpose of this monograph is twofold. First, the author, Dr. Ian Storey, provides a brief overview of the development of relations between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the People's Republic of China (PRC). Second, he explores the implications for the United States and, in particular, identifies the potential security challenges which might arise from this relationship. This monograph is part of a series of publications that seek to explorer the wide variety of challenges and opportunities our nation faces in the 21st century. This series comes from our 18th Strategy Conference, "Global Security Challenges to U.S. Interests." The monograph represents part of SSI's efforts to provide expert analysis of some of the most urgent issues confronting U.S. security in today's world.
