Klappentext

Gottlieb Mittelberger's Journey to Pennsylvania in the Year 1750 and Return to Germany in the Year 1754 is a first-hand account of the German immigrant experience in America during the mid-18th century. Originally published in German in 1756, this book was later translated into English and published in 1898. Mittelberger, a poor laborer from the German state of W¿¿¿¿¿rttemberg, was lured to America by promises of a better life and the prospect of owning his own land. He embarked on a grueling journey across the Atlantic Ocean, enduring harsh conditions and cramped quarters on board the ship. Upon arriving in Pennsylvania, he found himself in a strange new world, where he struggled to make a living and faced discrimination from the English-speaking settlers. Mittelberger's account provides a vivid description of the hardships and challenges faced by German immigrants in America during this time period. He describes the difficulties of finding work, the harsh living conditions, and the discrimination and prejudice he encountered. He also provides valuable insights into the social and economic conditions of colonial America, including the role of slavery and the tensions between different ethnic and religious groups. Despite the challenges he faced, Mittelberger remained in America for four years before returning to Germany. His account of his experiences provides a valuable historical document and a fascinating glimpse into the lives of early German immigrants in America. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
