Biografische Anmerkung

Natural plant extracts possess properties which are exploited world over. Traditional treatment of diseases like cancers, arthritis, sterility, psoriasis and diabetes lead to the treatment of hypopigmentation or vitiligo. In mammals, skin pigmentation is a highly complex phenomenon regulated mainly through the synthesis and distribution of the pigment-melanin by the neural crest derived epidermal cells melanocytes. Production of melanin or melanogenesis within melanocytes occurs through a chain of enzymatic and non-enzymatic reactions. The key enzyme tyrosinase is involved in regeneration of this melanin. This book deals with the experiments on purification and characterization of mushroom tyrosinases. An experimental autoimmune vitiligo was prevented by this tyrosinase and exact mechanism was unknown, so an attempt was made to explore the detailed mechanism of mushroom tyrosinase on B16F10 melanocyte cells. This proved a benchmark in exploring the diversity of mushroom and the effect of its tyrosinases on cultured melanocytes, for finding out melanogenic agents to treat vitiligo.
