Journey to the West, widely known as Monkey, Xi You Ji, is the most popular mythological novel attributed to Wu Cheng'en. It is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. The novel tells a story that monk Xuanzang and his disciples: Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, Sha Wujing and the white dragon horse go on a pilgrimage to the west in search of Buddhist scriptures. Along the way, they fight with various demons and monsters, undergo 81 trials and tribulations, finally obtain the true sutras. Wu Cheng'en (c. 1500-c. 1582), courtesy name Ruzhong, was a famous Chinese novelist and poet who lived in the Ming Dynasty. Wu was attributed with writing Journey to the West, numerous poems and stories.
