JOHN BUCHAN (1875-1940) was a British novelist and historian who divided his time between writing adventure fiction and serving in various political and diplomatic positions, the most notable of which was as Governor General of Canada.

Greenmantle is one of five John Buchan's novels that features the adventures of Major-General Sir Richard Hannay. Set during World War I, when Sir Hannay is asked to investigate rumors of an uprising in the Muslim world, he embarks on a dangerous trip that takes him through enemy territory to meet his friend Sandy in Constantinople and block German plans to use religion to help them win the war.
